Here are some thoughts on early childhood development, working with children, and then just some stuff for fun :)
"Free the child's potential, and you will transform him into the world."
- Maria Montessori
"Good teaching is one-fourth preparation and three-fourths pure theatre."
- Gail Godwin
"It is easier to build strong children than to repair broken men."
- Frederick Douglass
"Now, today, some children are enrolled in excellent programs. Some children are enrolled in mediocre programs. And some are wasting away their most formative years in bad programs....That's why I'm issuing a challenge to our states: Develop a cutting-edge plan to raise the quality of your early learning programs; show us how you'll work to ensure that children are better prepared for success by the time they enter kindergarten. If you do, we will support you with an Early Learning Challenge Grant that I call on Congress to enact."
- President Barack Obama
When children pretend, they're using their imaginations tomove beyond the bounds of reality. A stick can be a magicwand. A sock can be a puppet. A small child can be a superhero.
- Fred Rogers
Thank you, THANK YOU to my classmates for being supportive, constructive, and SO helpful as we wade through this program. I appreciate all of your insight and criticism each week, and look forward to every challenge as we learn so much about each other, our unique experiences, and diverse personalities.
A special thanks to two wonderful women who keep me going every single week. They challenge me with every post, every paper, and every blog, not only as an educator but also as a person in general. Stephanie and Lauren, you are amazing women. I am so lucky to have been placed in courses with you!

Hi Machaela, I posted this yesterday, but I put it in your "intelligence" post. So just in case you didn't see it...here it is again!
ReplyDeleteI just wanted to take a moment to thank you, but when I think about it, thank you does not seem big enough for how much I appreciate your support, encouragement and wealth knowledge that I have learned from you. You have been more than just a colleague sharing information as you have been there for support. You as well have been one of my "go to peeps" and I appreciate that so much, especially while studying on-line as it can be challenging to make connections when you don't have that face to face component. The knowledge that you bring forward and share each has made me a better educator as I learn each week from you!
I wish you all the best in your studies and I hope to see your name on the list starting Monday....my fingers are crossed!!
Take care,
Stephanie
Hi Machaela, What inspiring quotes! I especially love the quote by Fred Rogers and how he says, "that a stick can be a magic wand." If more people could understand the value of play and imagination they would truly understand the learning that is occurring during play. I found a similar quote, and it is true that to us it is just a stick, but to a child that stick can represent about 100 different things. We need to be reminded of how creative children are and take time to not only hear children play, but to truly listen while they are engaged in play...we can learn so much!
ReplyDeleteTake care,
Stephanie
Hi Machaela -
ReplyDeleteI really love this quote from Maria Montessori. "Free the child's potential, and you will transform him into the world." If all teacher's could understand just how important it is to free a child's potential we would have amazing experiences. All of your quotes are great, but I think this one is my favorite.
Thanks for sharing -
Gena

ReplyDeleteI want to take this opportunity to let you know how much I enjoyed getting to know you this class. Through all your informative post on both the blog and discussions, you helped me see many things from a different perspective and I really appreciate that! You can see the love you have for the children in your work you have shared with this class. I wish you continued success on this educational journey.
Best wishes -
Gena
Oh, honey. Thank you so much! You are such a love! You made me cry! And the feeling is absolutely mutual! I am so grateful to you, my dear. Thank you very much for offering me the connection that I never thought I would find on an online masters program. You are lovely, smart, elegant, eloquent, and I am proud to call you my friend! Thank you!
ReplyDeleteAnd, you quotes are the best! I particularly love Gail Godwin's quote! I am definitely stealing that one! It is so true. So much of any form of education is theater! Maybe that's part of why I love it so much as I've been away from my circus/theater/roots for what feels like ages.
Thank you for everything, Machaela. I will hold the intention that our academic timelines will realign soon!
All the best!
xo
