Code of Ethics

Both the NAEYC and DEC have Codes of Ethics that give early childhood educators a guideline on how to behave within our profession. Here are a few excerpts from the NAEYC that are meaningful to me.

I-1.11-To ensure that each child's culture, language, ethnicity, and family structure are recognized and valued in the program. On a daily basis I try to ensure that I meet this part of the code of ethical conduct. I work at a center with a very diverse population. Families represent a wide variety of culture, language and family structure. I strive to make sure that each of their difference and similarities are represented in their individual classroom as well as in the center as whole. We make sure that families see different languages represented in the classrooms, and that especially during holiday times we respect each individual belief.

I-2.-To be familiar with the knowledge base related to working effectively with families and to stay informed through continuing education and training. I, personally make this specific ideal a priority in my life. The world of early childhood education is constantly changing and new theories and information comes out every day. It's important to me to make sure that I at least have a knowledge of these developments. Through my employment I am required to have 15 continuing education hours per year, which helps to keep me on the cutting edge of information!

I-3A.1-To establish and maintain relationships of respect, trust, confidentiality, collaboration, and cooperation with co-workers. Respect, trust, confidentiality, collaboration and cooperation with co-workers is something that I value greatly. I work with a group of 35 amazing full time lead and assistant teachers. In a building that large creating relationships that follow all of these ideals can be hard. Each teacher has a different personality, learning style, and teaching style, and it is my job to figure out how to bring that all together and how to praise them each individually.

Each year we have all of our staff recommit to the NAEYC Code of Ethical Conduct by signing it to be placed in their files. It gives staff the opportunity for a refresher as to my expectations and just a general idea of how to move forward for the year with children, families, and co-workers.

  1. It was very hard just to pick three Code of Ethics. They all are very important. You are doing a good job. You are making sure everyone feels the same. That is really a good idea to have staff sign the NAEYC Code of Ethical Conduct.

  2. Hi Machaela, I can relate to the ideals you chose as, "To ensure that each child's culture, language, ethnicity, and family structure are recognized and valued in the program" shows us the importance of placing value on each child's diversity and what they bring to our programs. It emphasizes the importance of making sure that each child is valued regardless of their differences.

"To be familiar with the knowledge base related to working effectively with families and to stay informed through continuing education and training" makes us understand the importance of staying current and fresh with our training and education. I think we can all relate to this ideal as this may be the reason for some of us taking this Masters program, so we can work more effectively with families.

"To establish and maintain relationships of respect, trust, confidentiality, collaboration, and cooperation with co-workers." I can see why you chose this ideal as your program is so big and probably so diverse with that many co-workers that respect and trust must be key in working as a team. Your team is very lucky that this is one of your top three ideals as this shows them that you value and respect them.

Thank you for sharing the ideals that are meaningful to you!

    Take care,
    Stephanie

  3. Hi Machaela-
I love the idea of having the staff recommit to follow the NEAYC Code of Ethics!! Most all of us agree with the ideals, but it's so easy to forget about them. While I don't have people working under me as I work primarily as an independent contractor, I think I will send the code of ethics out to the group of colleagues that I work with most frequently and refer to continuously. I think they would appreciate it and it could spark good conversation, as well.
    Thanks for the post!

  4. HI Machaela-
I'm not sure if there is another way to post to you blog other than to comment on your post, so forgive me if this is the wrong space to leave my thank you's... But it was very easy for me to decide who to take a moment to thank this week!!! You have been so inspiring, committed, supportive, and insightful through this first eight weeks of our course. I honestly can't imagine having done it without you!! Your posts reminded me that I wasn't alone through this process, and I am very grateful. Thank you so very much and I sincerely hope that we will be in lots of courses together as our program progresses! Happy Holidays! -Lauren

  6. Machaela, I wanted to take a minute to thank you for your kind spirit and the positivity that you bring each week! Thank you for sharing your passion, knowledge and experience as it was so encouraging and contagious. As I said to Lauren, the both of you were the first two to post in our discussion board in our first week and for some reason I felt a connection even though we had never met! I looked forward to reading your posts each week as you have been such a positive contributor as your posts were rich with passion, experience and knowledge. Thank you for sharing your resources, especially the “Ooey Gooey Lady”…she is now at the top of my list! Each week I could feel the passion that you have for your program, families and educators grow in such a positive way. The appreciation that you have for them is so inspirational and they are blessed that you are there for them. You made it so easy for me reach out beyond our discussion board and I am glad that I did as it gave this experience a bit of a personal touch, so thank you for opening up!!!! I hope that I am fortunate enough to be in the same group as you once again, as you have taught me so much. We talked about how it would be great if we could go out for a drink at the end of the course, so since we can’t…here’s a Cheers to you and your family!!
I wish you all the best!
    Take care,
    Stephanie
